The Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) has plunged into further chaos following the removal of Prof. Jayantha Jayawardane as the SLMC Vice President, Daily Mirror learns.
According to sources, the decision has been taken without the consent of the council members.
The council members have reportedly informed the SLMC President to convene an emergency council meeting to discuss the matters transpired following the removal of Prof. Jayawardana.
In addition, the council members have requested the President to circulate the letter that is said to have been submitted to the health minister. Up to date, neither of the requests has been implemented.
According to the Association of Medical Specialists, the decision to remove Prof. Jayawardana could disrupt the independence and autonomy of the SLMC, as it could potentially hinder members from expressing their views openly and fully, which could have a significant impact on the SLMC.
Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has also raised concern and opposed the removal of Prof. Jayawardana.
Speaking to Daily Mirror, Prof. Jayantha Jayawardana breaking his silence said his removal was neither legal nor reasonable.
“I was removed without a reasonable hearing and thus, the removal is an arbitrary decision by the Minister on the request of the SLMC President.” He further stated that to date he has not been informed by the Minister or the President the reason for his sudden removal.
