A group of seven school children under 16 years of age including two school girls who held a drinking party in an abandoned building at Sappukade in Welimada were arrested by Welimada Police.
Police said they had broken open the doors of the abandoned Young Men’s Christian Association building and held a drinking party to celebrate the birthday of one of them.
Police on information from the public had carried out the raid and arrested the group of schoolchildren who were already under the influence of liquor. Police said they suspect schoolchildren were consuming a high-quality brand of liquor. Investigations revealed that they were students of a popular school in Welimada area and that they had left home under the pretext of attending tuition classes.
A police team under OIC Welimada Police Sampath Abeywickerama had carried out the raid.
