Select committee to look into economic crisis Terms of Reference to be changed

By Yohan Perera

Government is to call for the amendment to the resolution to change the Terms of Reference of the already adopted resolution to  appoint a select committee to probe as to who is responsible for the  current financial crisis in Parliament this week.

Accordingly, as per the order paper in the House the  government is to move the amendment to the resolution which was adopted  in January 2023 during this week’s sessions. As per the Amendment, the  proposed select committee will have to probe and report to Parliament  the causes for the Financial Bankruptcy declared by the Government and  submit its proposals and recommendations in this regard.

Accordingly, the select committee will be responsible for  carrying out an investigation to determine whether this economic crime  was committed intentionally by the authorities who are in charge of the  subjects of finance and economic affairs or by the Cabinet of Ministers,  whether the country had to experience an unprecedented economic crisis  and financial bankruptcy since the persons who were responsible had  failed to execute their duties properly and whether there are any other  reasons that would result the country experiencing such an economic crisis  and financial bankruptcy in the future.

The original resolution was adopted in January this year  but members of the select committee is yet to be appointed. The members  of the select committee, therefore, are expected to be appointed after the  amended resolution is adopted, Daily Mirror learns.
