Separate Trials-at-Bar to try Fmr. IGP and Fmr. Defence Secy.



  • Information on charges against them for murder and attempted murder was exhibited in the Colombo High Court 
  • They will be charged for the failure on their part to act upon intelligence

The Attorney General requested the Chief Justice in writing to appoint separate Trials-at-Bar to try former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando in connection with the serial bombings on Easter Sunday in 2019.   

According to the Attorney General’s Coordinating Secretary State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne, the information on charges against them for murder and attempted murder was exhibited in the Colombo High Court.   


They will be charged for the failure on their part to act upon intelligence regarding the mastermind of the carnage, Zahran Hashim and his accomplices, planning to target the places of religious worship and hotels, and to pre-empt the terrorist strike.  They will be indicted for murder and attempted murder in connection with 275 people who perished in the strike and 500 wounded.
