Sevanagala Sugar factory sparks political turbulence as Opposition Leader calls for transparency

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has voiced concerns about the future of the state-owned Sevanagala sugar factory, alleging that it is to be handed over to a close ally of the government. Speaking during a ceremony at Nugegolla MV in Matale, Mr. Premadasa emphasised that the people of the country, including schoolchildren, have the right to know the fate of this publicly-owned entity.   He asserted that the recent Cabinet reshuffle is linked to the privatization of the Sevanagala factory. 

 The former Minister of Plantations, Ramesh Pathirana, reportedly refused to transfer control of the factory to a government associate, resulting in a change in his portfolio. The newly appointed minister in charge of plantations is said to be pursuing the planned transaction.Mr. Premadasa defended his decision to discuss political matters in schools, emphasizing that children also have the right to be informed about the destiny of state-owned enterprises.  

The controversy surrounding the Sevanagala factory revolves around reports that it was to be handed over to former Minister Daya Gamage, who previously owned it until 2014. However, Mr. Gamage clarified that the fate of the factory is subject to a legal decision, stating, “The government has failed to compensate me since taking over the factory from me 12 years ago. We are engaged in a legal battle, and our objective is to either receive compensation or regain control of the factory. The courts will ultimately make a ruling on the matter.”
