Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday imposed a two-year-rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 100,000 on Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader and former Minister Wimal Weerawansa.

This is over an incident where Mrs. Weerawansa had fraudulently obtained two passports including a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Delivering the judgment, Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala observed that prosecution has proved the accused guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

The CID had commenced an investigation against Shashi Weerawansa over the charge of obtaining diplomatic and general passports illegally. She had allegedly submitted birth certificates with forged names and dates of birth to obtain those passports.

The court is yet to deliver its judgment regarding another case filed over obtaining a national identity card submitting forged birth certificate.

Senior Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Pieris appeared for the Attorney General.
