Police have arrested six suspects, including three supervisors of a leading courier service in connection with a robbery of iPhone mobile phones being sent to Sri Lanka via air cargo from abroad.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said around 19 iPhones have been stolen in this manner since last January.
The Police recovered 16 such stolen phones from mobile shops in Kandy, Divulapitiya and Minuwangoda.
During the course of the investigations, the other three suspects who were employees of a manpower company believed to have opened the sealed air cargo packs at the Airport at the instructions of courier service supervisors and stolen the iPhones.
The value of the stolen iPhones was believed to be over Rs. 3 million.
The suspects were remanded till May 10 today after being produced before the Negombo Magistrate.
The scam was brought to light by the Negombo Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit following a complaint.
The DIG urged the public if they happened to have been victims of such a scam, to come forward and lodge a complaint with the police.
