South - west monsoon setting in over Sri Lanka

By Yohan Perera

The South-West monsoon will gradually set in across the island during the next few days, The Department of Meteorology said yesterday.

Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are expected  at some places in the  Sabaragamuwa Province and in Galle, Matara and Kalutara Districts. Several spells of showers are also expected   in North-Western and Uva provinces. Strong winds about (40-45) kmph can be expected at times over the Island.

The General public are  requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Meanwhile the minor flood situation which was reported from Galle, Matara and Kalutara Districts has receded as water levels of rivers including Nilwala, Kalu and Gin rivers have subsided.
