All spill gates of the Victoria Reservoir Dam have been automatically opened in response to torrential downpours that have lashed the country over the past few days, an engineer confirmed.
The rising water levels triggered the safety measure, ensuring controlled release of excess water and preventing potential dam overflow. This comes as Ceylon Electricity Board data indicates that hydropower currently serves as the primary source of electricity generation for most of the nation.
The adverse weather conditions, however, have also caused disruptions elsewhere. The Kandy-Mahiyangana Road remains blocked after a boulder tumbled onto the highway.
