Sri Lanka cannot fully rely on importing oxygen from overseas: Deputy DG Health

  • Available oxygen reserves in the country are fast depleting

By Sheain Fernandopulle

In a situation where Sri Lanka has decided to import oxygen, Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said Sri Lanka cannot fully rely on importing oxygen from foreign countries because their situation is also grim that they may be hesitant to provide oxygen for Sri Lanka.

Dr. Herath said oxygen reserves in the country had almost depleted. “With the Delta variant becoming predominant in Sri Lanka as in many other countries, the demand for oxygen has equally risen,” he
pointed out.

Having said that, he stressed that they had provided all hospitals with oxygen concentrators to meet the requirement. “However, there is always a limit for everything. We are trying our level best to balance the situation while making sure that the demand for oxygen is met in the country,” he added.
