The Department of Meteorology confirmed that the volume of rainfall had increased this year compared to the last year , another phenomenon of climate change.  According to the Department of Census and Statistics, rainfall is of three types, monsoonal, conventional and depression. Monsoon rain occurs during the two monsoon periods, namely, the South - west and North - east, and is responsible for nearly 55 per cent of the annual precipitation.

Conventional rain occurs during the Inter-monsoon periods, mainly in afternoons or evenings and is likely to be experienced anywhere in the country. Depression rain also occurs during the Intermonsoonal periods, particularly during the second Intermonsoon (October to November).
Meteorologist Malith Fernando told Daily Mirror that the volume of rainfall had increased severely in the seasons and attributes it to the climate change affecting the Pacific Ocean and the tropical depression that formed in the Indian Ocean. The impact of these conditions has affected fishing communities worldwide.
The meteorologist also said that in the first three months of 2025 Sri Lanka is forecasted to go back to normal conditions “the next three months are expected to have normal climate conditions”.
