Sri Lanka faces transboundary pollution

Sri Lanka is currently subjected to transboundary air pollution where carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide particles coming in from India and other countries with the winds, Minister of Environment Nazeer Ahamed told Parliament yesterday   

“These particles have come from India and other countries into Sri Lanka through winds that billow into the country as a result of atmospheric conditions that is prevailing at the moment. However the situation in Sri Lanka has started receding” he added.   


“Particles of the gasses in the air can get into the lungs and blood streams and can cause heart conditions” he also said.   


The minister stressed the need for effective monitoring of Sri Lanka’s air quality.” Sri Lanka will make use of the international climatic conventions it has got into to deal with the situation.
