Sri Lanka is in negotiation with India seeking further extension of credit facilities for essential imports, an official said.
India has already offered US $ 1 billion for the import of food items and medicines, and another US $ 500 million to import fuel.
Vajira Abeywardana, the chairman of the United National Party (UNP) led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, held talks with Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay on Thursday . Mr. Abeywardana told Daily Mirror that the extension of the Indian credit line is negotiated for essential imports.
Sri Lanka mainly imports rice from India. The country is facing a food shortage after the crop failure triggered by the lack of chemical fertiliser during the last season.
