Sri Lanka’s recovery is one of the greatest comeback stories, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu has said. During a panel discussion organized by the US Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington, Mr. Lu took Sri Lanka as an example to explain economic recoveries.
“There were long queues for fuel. There were street riots. Protesters seized the presidential palace.
They were seen swimming in the pool, and they were cooking in the palace kitchen. India came in to help out and provided funds to bring in essentials. So did the USA,” he recalled.
“Sri Lanka then went into a successful debt restructuring process by getting China also to agree to it. Today, IMF funds are coming into Sri Lanka. This is an example of a great comeback,” he said.
