Sudden fuel price hike by CPC draws widespread protests across country

Several protests are being witnessed across the country, especially in major towns throughout the day after the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) increased the price of fuel .  

 Due to the widespread protests, several main roads, namely the Colombo-Kandy road and Colombo-Chilaw road have been blocked by protesters since yesterday morning.  Trains on the main line were delayed as the protesters were blocking the railway line in the Rambukkana area. Later in the day the Police have fired tear gas to disperse protesters who were blocking the Rambukkana Railway Crossing for over 15 hours.   Several more protests have been witnessed in Kandy, Galle, Gampola, Mathugama, Baddegama, Avissawella, Kegalle, Hingurakgoda, and Madampe yesterday morning.
