A factory in the Embilipitiya area that adulterated white sugar  with colouring and issued them to the market under the label of brown  sugar was sealed during a raid on Thursday evening (15) by a team of  investigation officers from Ratnapura District Consumer Affairs  Authority office.

Media Spokesman for the CAA said 2,500 empty bags for 50  kilos of brown sugar each, a stock of colouring, equipment and tools  used in the process had been seized.

He said that the racket had been going on unchecked for a long time and consignments of fake brown sugar had been distributed to  several areas of the country.

Investigations revealed that white sugar costing Rs. 240 a  kilo had been sold for Rs.300 a kilo after turning brown. The CAA was to  submit a report in this regard to Embilipitiya Magistrate.
