Teachers and principals will have to start their teaching duties after they are given the second vaccination to shield against COVID-19 by next week, Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardana said.
He told the Daily Mirror that the majority of teachers and principals have been given the second dose of the vaccine as the vaccination drive comes to an end by next week. However, no sudden decision could be taken to re-open schools until we are assured of the health Ministry recommendation he said. “Discussions are underway with the health ministry in this regard as to which grades should start first. But it is difficult to get a decision with the current pandemic situation in the country,” the Minister said.
However, before reopening of schools, an extensive cleaning campaign should be launched for the safety of the children, teachers and other school staff.
Teachers and principals can return to their duties after the second jab according to guidelines issued by the Health Ministry.
