A tense situation erupted outside the Presidential Secretariat yesterday after a group of protesters of the Socialist Youth Union (SYU) attached to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) forcibly entered the Presidential Secretariat premises.

The protesters who marched to the Presidential Secretariat from the Technical Junction forcibly entered the premises of the Presidential Secretariat through the main gate despite heavy security.

However, the STF personnel who were stationed inside the premises prevented the protestors from intruding into the Secretariat.

The protesters who sat on the premises of the Presidential Secretariat held a meeting where several union leaders made speeches.

Even though they had planned to submit a letter to the President, they burnt it publicly claiming that no one came to accept the letter.

The SYU launched the protest against the hardships caused to the people due to queues for fuel, gas and other essentials and also calling for the government to take over the Trincomalee Oil Tank Farm and Yugadanavi Power Plant.
