About 2 to 4 percent of the PCRs tests done in Colombo City are found to be COVID-19 positive Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake said yesterday.
Ms. Senanayake said most of those who are positive in Colombo City are ones who come to the city for official purposes rather than residents within the city. “We have found out that most of those in the Bank of Ceylon cluster and other clusters are ones who come to Colombo on a daily basis for work,” the Mayor said.
She said that the aim of the CMC is to provide vaccines to around 100,000 people in Colombo City. “I am working with Minister Sudarshini Fernandopulle and Advisor to the President Lalith Weeratunga to get vaccines. Vaccines are being given from seven centres out of which three are maintained by the CMC, while the rest is handled by the Army,” she said.
Ms. Senanayake denied the allegations made by Venerable Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera that her residence was converted into a vaccine centre. “The priest is being misinformed. My residence was never a vaccine centre,” she said.
Also she denied the claims made by opposition members of CMC that providing vaccines have run into problems as some who have gone to get it were turned back. “There may have been a few minor issues in vaccine centres as there were heavy crowds and I have called for an inquiry on these,” Ms. Senanayake said in response.
JVP member of CMC Hemantha Kumara said some of the workers attached to CMC were not able to get the vaccines yesterday. “This was the result of a tussle among some of the CMC officers,” he said. Also JVP members and some SLPP members of CMC have refused to take the vaccine as they want the priority to be given to front line health workers. Ms. Senanayake said all frontline health workers were given the priority.
