An attempt to go abroad on forged passports was foiled by the CID at Katunayake International Airport and three suspects were arrested including the racketeer who had planned the trip.
The two men aged 47 and 37 years from Vavuniya and Batticaloa had called over at the airport in the early hours of Saturday (11) to fly to Canada through Dubai. However they were arrested by the CID when it came to light that they were in possession of forged passports.
Under interrogation they provided information leading to the arrest of the third individual who had planned their travel abroad during a raid on a tourist hotel in Negombo..
The 47 year old suspect was a resident of Sandilipai in Jaffna who had been living in Canada on resident cards. During the raid the police seized seven forged passports bearing Canadian VISA’s and ten boarding cards for an Indian Airline.
Police said the three suspects were to be produced before Negombo magistrate last morning.
