Former Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday warned that the country would have to face a total collapse in the power system, if the power crisis was not addressed by the end of March, 2022.
He told Parliament that if the country’s hydropower generation dropped below 20 per cent, that would result in a total power system collapse as regulation and frequency control totally relied on hydropower.

He said hydropower reserves stood at 85 per cent by January 1 and added that it had dropped to 50 per cent within 40 days and added that if this situation continued for 40 more days, total power system collapse is inevitable.  “If this crisis is not addressed by end of March, power outage will not be limited to one or one and half hours. It will end up in a total power system collapse,” he said.
