Tourists enjoying boat rides in the Kande Ela tank expressed concern about the use of makeshift rafters turned out with empty barrels to carry tourists. 


They pointed out that more than 20 people are carried in a rafter at a time regardless of its danger. 
Tourist said that they are not provided safety jackets although they have to pay exorbitant prices for a ride.

However, Asst. Director, Nuwara Eliya Disaster Management Unit Ranjith Alahakoon said the ferrymen in the Kande Ela lake had been instructed to provide safety jackets to the tourists and continually warned to adhere to the instructions. He said he informed the District Secretary and Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretary to streamline the boat service in the Kande Ela lake.
