Most of the tsunami warning towers installed in the coastal areas of the country are out of order.  Senior official of the Disaster Management Centre said 57 out of 77 tsunami warning towers are out of order.

The official said about eleven of them could be activated from the Disaster Management Centre and nine from the location. He said the other 57 warning towers were completely out of order.
He said technical expertise for the warning towers had been provided by American Signal Corporation and that the Police and the Army were put in charge of them at district level under the direct supervision of the Disaster Management Centre.
The Disaster Management official further said that the technology of the tsunami warning towers were now outdated and most them have been subject to corrosion.
