Two Iranian inmates detained at the Colombo Remand Prison were killed and eight others were hospitalised after they consumed alcohol-based sanitizer.

Prisons Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said the injured were admitted to the Prisons Hospital.

He said the Iran Embassy in Colombo had provided sanitizer to the inmates in the prison.

The inmates detained on charges of heroin trafficking had consumed the sanitizer on Wednesday, the spokesman said.

He said the Iranian Embassy had been informed in this regard and the hospitalised inmates were not in critical conditions.
