Two ministers harbour contrasting views on rice imports

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and Trade Minister Nalin Fernando share contrasting views on the need to import rice to ensure price controls in the retail market.

Mr. Fernando told the media that he would take steps to import rice unless local suppliers failed to stick to the maximum retail price rates for all varieties of the product.

However, Minister Amaraweera said a bumper harvest is expected in the next season, and therefore, no need will arise for rice imports.

“We can expect a good harvest as it is raining enough now for farmers to cultivate,” he said.
