Northern Province Governor, P. S. M. Charles, has instructed Provincial Education Authorities to swiftly launch an investigation into the tragic incident that claimed the lives of two school students.

The students were participating in a school sports competition when they tragically fell into an unguarded water hole. The Governor’s directive aims to expedite the inquiry and ensure a timely report is furnished on the matter.
The Governor expressed deep sorrow at the tragic passing of 14-year-old Nias Ahmed and 15-year-old Azad Mohammed, both students of Vavuniya Muslim College. The unfortunate incident occurred on August 17 at the Vavuniya University Sports Ground. The Governor personally engaged with the relevant authorities to gather information about the incident.

During a school sports competition, these two students ventured near a water-filled pit situated close to the stadium. Reports indicate that one of the students accidentally fell into the pit. In a valiant attempt to help his friend, the other student also ended up in the water.

Quick-acting individuals at the scene managed to rescue the students, who were then rushed to Poovarasankulam Hospital. Despite these efforts, both students were tragically declared deceased.
The bodies of the children were transferred to the Vavuniya Hospital Mortuary.
