Five uniforms belonging to a newly established Police Unit by the Jaffna Municipal Council were taken into the custody of the Jaffna Police yesterday.
The uniforms are said to be similar to LTTE police uniforms.

Jaffna Mayor Visvalingam Manivannan said that a five member Police unit has been established to protect the cleanliness of Jaffna.

The Mayor said the unit was established in order to take legal action on those who pollute the main streets of Jaffna, those who spit betel on the road, those who pollute the roads in various ways and those who do not follow health precautions.

It was reported that there are plans to impose a fine of Rs. 1000 to Rs. 5000 for unauthorized parking of vehicles.

According to the residents, the uniforms of the five-member Police unit were used during the war by the LTTE police.

Municipal Council officials have been instructed to report to the Jaffna Police Station to record statements regarding the establishment of the Police Unit and the role of the unit.
When the Daily Mirror contacted the Jaffna Police OIC, he said the police had launched special investigation into the incident.
