Making the first such arrest after establishing a new unit to trace culprits who upload child porn videos and images to the internet or social media, a 25-year old man who had uploaded more than 500 videos and images was arrested, police said. 

Police Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspect, a resident of Badalkumbura had used several fake Facebook Accounts to collect videos and photographs.
The suspect was remanded after being produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.   

Mr. Rohana said the new unit was established at the Children and Womens Bureau in Colombo in June this year in order to monitor pornographic video clips and photos connected to children.   

The new unit is equipped with technology to identify the user, their IP addresses and telephone numbers within moments once they upload porn material related to children on the internet or social media plat­forms such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Viber, Youtube or Imo through any devices,” he said 

 
He said the police are vigilantly patrolling cyberspace to monitor pornography related uploads.   
The spokesman said the police also identified at least 10 others who have been involved in such nefarious crimes.   
He said operations are underway to arrest those suspects as well.
