Uvatenne Sumana Thera remanded over alleged financial fraud



  • Sumana Thera had issued eight dishonored cheques amounting to Rs.58 million in lieu of purchasing coconut oil from a businessman

Chief incumbent of the Maligawatta Sri Bodhirajarama Vihara Uvatenne Sumana Thera has been remanded till December 14 by Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court over an alleged financial fraud relating to a coconut oil deal.  

The CID alleged that Sumana Thera had issued eight dishonored cheques amounting to Rs.58 million in lieu of purchasing coconut oil from a businessman in Dematagoda. The CID told the court that the suspect monk had purchased 84,240 kg of coconut oil while acting in the capacity of a private company Director.
