The programme to administer vaccines to shield against COVID-19 for all teachers in the country will commence from Monday (12), Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said.

He said the decision was taken following a discussion with the President last week to conduct a vaccination programme for teachers within a week.

Accordingly, all teachers of 10,155 schools, principals and all non-academic staffers will get the vaccines, the minister said.

Addressing the media at the ministry yesterday, he said due to the direct intervention of the President, this task is to be completed soon.

Accordingly, the decision was taken following discussions with all the Provincial Governors, Chief Secretaries, Provincial Education Directors and the Health Division last morning.

“The principals will appoint support staff and send teachers to the respective centres to identify the people and vaccinate all the teachers as a priority group so that the schools could be reopened soon as a first step,” the Minister added.
