People in Moratuwa yesterday commemorated the national hero Weera Puranappu who laid down his life for the freedom of the country.   

Moratuwa Municipal Council had organised the ceremony to mark the 74th national day with Mayor of Moratuwa Samanlal Fernando as the chief guest.   

Born on November 12, 1812, at Uyana in Moratuwa, and named as Hennedige Fransisku Fernando, he changed his name to Puranappu and dedicated his life for the freedom struggle.   
Weera Puranappu who led the 1848 rebellion was taken prisoner by the British troops and executed.
