The prisoners at the Welikada and Mahara Prisons continued with their hunger strike for the third day by climbing on the roofs of the prisons, prison authorities said.

Prisons Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said the inmates had given up the strike on Saturday but they had resumed it yesterday.
The protest began in the wake of the release of former MP Duminda Silva under a presidential pardon and the inmates launched their hunger strike on Friday afternoon demanding their death sentences be commuted to life imprisonment.

The prisoners did not accept their morning meals. The Prison Administration informed the inmates that negotiations are underway to commute their death sentence to life imprisonment.
