A wild elephant from the Yala National Park frequenting Situlpawwa road had been shot dead by an unidentified individual.
The carcass lying on the road was recovered last morning by the wildlife conservators in the National Park.
Asst. Director, Uva Wildlife Zone Upul Indrajith said the proposed project to construct an electric fence from Nimalawa to Bambawa to prevent wild elephants roaming into the villages had been abandoned due to the obstructions of the local politicians.
He said the fence posts and other materials for the project had been destroyed by them and that the local politicians who sabotaged the project were responsible for the death of wild elephants in this manner.
Park Warden Manoj Widyaratne said he would submit a report to the magistrate on the death of the jumbo.
