A woman carrying her four year child had been trampled to death by a wild elephant in the early hours of last morning. She had run away for safety with her child when a wild elephant that roamed into the home garden entered the house. However, the jumbo had given chase and trampled her to death.

The victim Sunwetha Disanayake (35) of Dehigolla in Mahiyangana was mother of two children.  The neighbours who rushed to the scene drove away the jumbo with great difficulty and admitted the injured child to hospital.   Investigations revealed that the marauding herd had caused extensive damage to several other houses in the village.   Mahiyangana Police are conducting further investigations.
