Worker hacked to death at a prawn farm

An altercation between two workers at a prawn farm in Mangalaeliya in Mundalama had ended in a murder. The victim Rajendra Rajasekaran (37) was a resident of Yatiyantota area, and he had been working on the prawn farm for about two years.


Investigations revealed that he was a drunkard who often consumed a great deal of liquor and behaved in an unruly manner. He had been hacked to death with a sharp weapon when he assaulted the suspect.


Police said the owner of the prawn farm had given Rs.15,000 to Rajendra to buy dry rations for the three workers and that he had been spending that money to drink from morning. An altercation over wasting money on drinking resulted in the killing. His head and body had separated causing his instant death.


Puttalam Actg. Magistrate Vazeem Rajah who held the preliminary magisterial inquiry ordered police to refer the body to JMO Puttalam Base Hospital for  a postmortem examination.


OIC Crime Investigation Branch SI Herath is conducting further investigations on the instructions of OIC Mundalama Police CI Asitha Lakruwan.
