Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday cautioned the government of a food crisis in the near future as a result of the X-Press Pearl tragedy and of increasing prices of essential goods.

“The Government has failed to focus on the contamination of seafood as a result of acids which go into the water from the sunken X-Press Pearl. “There is a high population in Sri Lanka which consumes fish and the government should focus on it,” he said speaking to party seniors yesterday via zoom.

He questioned whether the government has decided to promote and supply alternative food which contains proteins.

“Prices of vegetables have already been increased and the prices of chicken and other meat is likely to go up soon. Government does not seem to be focusing on addressing the issues which might arise in the future,” he added.
