To celebrate World Children’s Day and mark 35 years of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Daily Mirror turned over its reins to an extraordinary group of editors, writers, and creative minds—children! In collaboration with UNICEF Sri Lanka and supported by the National Institute of Education, this initiative showcased the power of children’s voices when given the platform to shine.

From hard-hitting editorials to eye-opening features, the young contributors were given exposure to the daily functions of the newspaper and were guided on how to tackle topics ranging from climate action and mental health to education reforms and gender equality. Their pieces reflected a mix of fresh perspectives and profound insights, proving that age is no barrier to thoughtful discourse.   
This landmark initiative embodies two key pillars of the Child Rights Convention—the right to express themselves and the right to participate. It also highlights the tangible impact of creating spaces for children to be seen and heard.   
UNICEF Sri Lanka Representative, Christian Skoog commenting on the engagement said, “When children are given the opportunity to participate meaningfully, they become catalysts for change.”   
The takeover is a powerful reminder of the potential within every child to contribute to shaping a brighter future. By amplifying their voices, this collaboration has sparked conversations that resonate far beyond World Children’s Day.
