A young woman who had eloped with her lover was found dead on the Kondaipitty beach in Mannar. Her body was recovered last morning by Mannar Police who suspect foul play.

The body was identified by her mother as Kirthina (22) of Jaffna. Investigations revealed that she had been employed in a garment factory in Mannar.

Fishermen told police that they saw her falling down the bridge. They said they attempted to save her, but she disappeared.

Investigations based on CCTV recordings revealed that she had been in the company of a young man in the Mannar bus stand two days ago.

Police said the young man could have been her lover and that she would have taken her life over a dispute with him. However, the police had not ruled out the possibility of foul play.  A senior police official said they were conducting an investigation on the suspicion of her lover pushing her down the bridge. He said a police team had been deployed to trace the whereabouts of the young man.
