A couple of local tourists on a visit to Nuwara Eliya, who had been staying in a lodge at Kalukele off Nuwara Eliya were found dead in their room last morning.
A toxic gas from the barbeque grill is believed to have caused their death.
The deceased Kumara.Herath (59) and M.N.Molagoda (58) were from Gokarella in Kurunegala.
The two elderly members of the family had gone to bed after a barbecue dinner had used the barbecue grill as a heater.
Others in the family who noticed the elderly couple’s delay in waking up had opened the door to find them dead.
A senior police official said the deaths may have been due to the inhalation of carbon monoxide emitted from the barbecue grill, but it was yet to be established.
Nuwara Eliya police are conducting further investigations.
