Perera, one of the country's most successful spinners, resigned to take on a new position as the Spin Bowling Coach of the Sri Lanka Under-19 Team, Chief Selector Upul Tharanga said.
Perera, along with four other former cricketers led by Tharanga, was appointed to the NSC in December 2023 following Sri Lanka's disappointing performance in the 2023 World Cup, where they won only two out of nine games, failing to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Currently, Perera is in the UAE with the Sri Lanka Under-19 Team, where he is serving as the acting Head Coach during the Asia Cup series, filling in for regular Head Coach Ruwan Kalpage, who is unavailable due to personal reasons.
Perera played 43 Tests and 13 ODIs for Sri Lanka, claiming 161 Test wickets at an average of 35.9. He was known for his accuracy and ability to exploit sub-continental conditions, and he recorded five 10-wicket match hauls in Test cricket.
Following Perera’s resignation, the NSC now consists of four members: Upul Tharanga, Ajantha Mendis, Tharanga Paranavithana and Indika De Seram.
