August 05 - Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly resigned and left the capital Dhaka amid violent protests demanding her resignation, a source close to the embattled leader told the news agency AFP.
"She and her sister have left Ganabhaban (the Prime Minister's official residence) for a safer place," the source told AFP.
"She wanted to record a speech. But she could not get an opportunity to do that," the source said.
Hundreds of thousands of protesters demanding PM Hasina's resignation defied curfew, marching on the capital's streets and entering the Prime Minister's palace.
Soldiers and police with armoured vehicles in Dhaka had barricaded routes to Ms Hasina's office with barbed wire, AFP reporters said, but vast crowds flooded the streets, tearing down barriers.
Local media estimated as many as 400,000 protesters were on the streets but it was impossible to verify the figure.

Security Forces Must Be Neutral and Be Fair Monday, 05 August 2024 03:55 PM
Final payment was done this year after a 2 year delay! Anyways, this whole episode in Bangladesh is a good example where the learned students and citizens won’t tolerate anymore nonsense from dictators. Just hope the Presidential and next year's Parliamentarian elections are done fairly. If not for the Bangladeshi Army who used their common sense and saw the way the PM was running the country, they didn’t intervene with the protest. Hope the SL Tri forces will learn something from their Bangladeshi counterparts and will not intervene if there is widespread fraud similarly in the recent elections in Venezuela.

Gota had to pay 12.5 billion ISB loans taken by Ranil. Sri Lanka was downgraded bcs of ISBs taken by Ranil. Debt restructuring was extremely difficult and was unfavorable for SL bcs of Ranil's ISB loans.

She has done a GOTA. She surely would have been guided by the banished Raja clan how to do a swift exit. Becomes the 2nd Asian to do it. Wonder if she has landed here.

What happened in Sri Lanka about two years ago is now being repeated on a much larger scale in Bangladesh. These dictators who take the law into their own hands and unleashes horrendous terror on the civilians should be brought to trial and put behind bars. A few weeks ago, probably on the instructions of this bitch, police were driving their vehicles into crowds. This is totally unacceptable. Thank almighty God, that she could not even record a farewell speech,

i think you are confused...be it sri lanka or bangaladesh, all these politicians you call dictators are democratically elected by the majority people, so if you need to blame someone blame the voters...when voters dont change their leaders at the right time..these things happen.

Adolf Hitler was also elected Chancellor in a free democratic election. However, everyone knew that he would become a dictator. In contrast, Ranil was not elected by the people but has increasingly become a dictator since he took office.

She didn’t practice fair elections over the past elections - period. Don’t blame the voters here. Go read up the number of protest over the years and how brutal her regime was in suppressing opposition and even their Green movement.

Fraud and Not Voters to Be Blamed Monday, 05 August 2024 04:49 PM
Hey Dinesh, there was fraud in the all past elections in Bangladesh. Their opposition was suppressed and any opposition was silenced. So don’t blame the voters.

Haseena was in power for decades. Gota was only in power for mere 2 years. Gota never fired at protesters. In fact Gota was one of the most democratic leaders we had.

Gota is good at issuing killing orders but none taken that order. But in Bangladesh the rulers underestimated the people power and so killing orders were accepted.

Another political coup taking place and it is due to harsh political treatment and people are so angry and you can't keep killing people like this ..How many already died and how many more . You can't deliver go home with respect and Ranil should have learned his lesson from all this. Ranil should respect democracy and if people decided to elect some else Ranil must react it . All pray for a peaceful election in Sri lanka . Sri Lankan must use their wisdom in this election

Do you ever think that there are no "hidden powers" behind these protests? Without the backing of certain powerful yet invisible hands, students or whoever, can't organise themselves like this (this was apparent in the Sri Lanka Aragalaya as well). The next step for these powers is to install "puppet leaders" who are docile. Then these great countries, will become servile forever. Luckily, we had a leader like Ranil who managed the situation. That is why these powers want to see his exit. Then weak leaders will come into top positions, and they will dance to the tune of these hidden powers. Unfortunately, people are driven by emotions and sentiments. They do not see the wider picture.

Bangladesh was doing better than Sri Lanka so much so they gave lent money to SL! Now these radical protesters toppled everything that was going good for them. They will realize when the dust settles. Hasina is not the loser in the end.

What is the meaning of your sentence? can't you remember the hardships we endured standing in long queues and without most of essential goods and services? Was Sri Lanka in a position to hold even a cooperative election? Mr Ranil Wickramasinghe brought in stability first before holding elections. The opposition leader and then the man with Marxist ideology were invited to take over the nation. The rest is history. It was only Mr Ranil Wickramasinghe who had the courage to take up the challenge. Now an election has been declared at the right time. If you are so ungrateful, you can vote for another person you want. But some day, I will tell you, you will repent.

Pakistan, Bangladesh , Nepal and Sri Lanka, all these countries will remain in poverty for ever , that is the plan of influential powers. When they try to raise their head and try to stand on their feet, they create a reason to get rid of the leader thorough their contractors in the country. JVP is one of such contractors and has been systematically doing the same. Now the Bangladesh success story will be over. They will permanently live under floods and congestion. That is their fate I guess. Sri Lanka will soon have the same fate with AKD.

Hey Tessa, on all your previous and current reviews, you show your hatred towards NPP. Seems you are very satisfied and having a comfortable life either in SL or overseas with the current and previous regimes policies. Be fair and understand the average citizen’s predicament! They work their butts off and a good amount of their salary is used to pay for the high taxes, inflation and having a miserable life. Have you notice the so called politician’s luxurious lifestyle using loans or taxpayer’s funds?

Tissa Fernando Monday, 05 August 2024 06:49 PM
All I am saying is that NPP was 60% responsible for your problems. I have seen them how they work in the universities to disrupt the education. The hardships that you encountered were due to your own doing, strikes work to rule, no tax, free everything, electing corrupt politicians, not doing your part but expecting government to give you everything. When you were hit with covid, how many protests and strikes did you have? Many. Your teachers started it when Gota wanted to give opportunities to fee paying students at Kotalawala Military run University. When Gota did allow such protests and did nothing to control it, you guys continued with more vigour to satisfy subversive political party agendas. Now you think that bringing these same subversives who damaged your economy would solve all your problems. You are greatly mistaken. Yes, I live a comfortable life as I work 12 hours a day and I do it with dedication and complaining. You do the same .

I don't consider achievements in the past 2 years any great. It's just more borrowing. Monday, 05 August 2024 07:45 PM
Education is different from intellect. SLns may be educated but certainly not intellectuals at all. I know SLns will not like reading this but it is very clearly demonstrated since "independence"; SL had been always DEPENDENT on loans and aids which they never used wisely. Many are happy RW got rid of queues. But how he do it? He borrowed more and continue to borrow more. All SLns are very happy with it. They don't realise that as the borrowing keeps growing they will not stand in queues but LIVE in queues. I am sure even Sajith or Anura would have been able to borrow. As it is we can see that despite not fulfilling conditions IMF will continue to lend. Why? If not SL will resort to China which the west and India detest. Crux of the matter is SL will continue to borrow from somewhere or everywhere as far as one could stretch their immagination. Borrowing makes SL subservient to the lenders.
