In the previous article under the above heading, we explained the Chara Karakas as a prelude to familiarising the readership with the Chara Dasa system because as we have already pointed out that the general reader may also often come across the term, Chara Dasas when reading classical works as well as feature articles by veteran astrologers. Therefore, it is a great advantage for both students and practitioners to become conversant with at least the rudiments of the Chara Dasa System.
The Chara Dasa system is based on the Chara Karaka system. So, those have already read our previous article on the subject ought to know Chara Karakas are.
Aspects in Jaimini System
In Jaimini System, it is the signs that aspect, not the planets as taught in the Parasara System.
The aspects are as follows:
- All Movable (Chara)signs aspect the Fixed (Tira) signs except the adjacent one
- All Fixed signs aspect the Movable signs except the adjacent one
- All Dual (Ubhaya) signs aspect the other Duel signs.
Following table shows what signs aspect the other signs under this System
Alternative Lagnas used in Chara Dasa System are Karakamsa, Arudha Lagna and
Upapada Lagna.
Karakamsa Lagna: We already have explained who Atmakaraka (AK) is. The sign occupied by AK in the Navamsa Chart is Karakamsa. This sign becomes the
Karakamsa Lagna.
Arudha Lagna: The method to determine the Arudha Lagna. Say the Lagna or the Ascendant in
your Natal Chart is Libra and Lagna Lord Venus occupies the Aquarius sign – the 5th House, count five Houses from that sign, the fifth sign that is: Gemini becomes the Arudha Lagna.
Upapada Lagna: It is the 12th Pada or House of Arudha Lagna which is very important for judgment of the matrimonial status.
Yogas in Jaimini System
The yogas in Jaimini System are different from those coming in Parasara System. It has its own set of Rajayogas arising from combinations of Karakas and sign aspects between AK, Amk, PK, and SK and the 5th lord.
Following are two special yogas that come under the Jaimini System.
- Moon – Venus conjunction and their mutual aspects
- Moon aspected by many planets
Chara Dasa order and Calculations
We have already explained that Chara Dasa are the Dasas of signs, not planets as it is in Vimshottari Dasa system.
Order of Dasas: Direct Order: Aries, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius and Pisces
Indirect Order: Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn
Examples: For Aries Lagna the Order of Dasas is Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio. Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces
For Taurus Lagna the Order is: (The reverse of the direct order: Taurus, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini
The same Order rule applies to sub-periods but the main Dasa’s sub-period comes last in the order – just the opposite in the
Vimshottari system.
Reckoning of the duration of Dasa periods
Count the number of Houses from Dasa sign to the Dasa lord. Deduct 1 from the total. The result is the Sign (Rasi) Dasa duration
Direct Order Signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius
Indirect Order Signs: Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces.
Examples: For Aries Dasa (direct): the Aries lord Mars is placed in the 5th House from Aries. The count result is 5. Deduct 1 from it and the Aries Dasa works out to 4 years
For Cancer Dasa (indirect): The Cancer Lord Moon is placed in the 10th House from Cancer. The count result is 10. Deduct 1 from it and the Cancer Dasa works out to 9 years.
Please take the following factors into reckoning.
- If the lord of the sign (Rasi) is placed in the same Rasi, Dasa period is reckoned as 12 years without any deductions
- Special rules must be applied in case of Scorpio Dasa as the sign has the dual ownership of Mars and Ketu
- Say Mars or Ketu is placed in the Scorpio sign itself, then we have to consider the other one for calculating the number of years for the Dasa overlooking the one placed in Scorpio. Standard deduction rules apply.
- If both are placed in Scorpio, grant full 12 years without deduction
- If both are placed in a Rasi other than Scorpio, take the stronger one of the two for calculating the duration of the Dasa period.
For Aquarius Dasa, the same rules as for Scorpio apply, because of the dual ownership of Saturn and Rahu.
Calculation of the duration of sub-periods
- Each sub-period in months is equal to the number of years of the Maha Dasa
- Similarly, each sub-period in days is directly proportional to the number of moths for the Sub-period.
The following table will the reader understand the above calculation.
Readers are advised to do more reading of the Chara Dasa system in classical works on Jaimini Astrology to gain a
better understanding.
