200 more public sector unions on strike today

Colombo, July 9 (Daily Mirror) - Over 200 public sector unions launched a sick leave campaign yesterday (8), which continues today (9), according to the Provincial Public Service Unions Collective.

Participants include government officials such as postal workers, surveyors, Agricultural officers, Grama Niladhari officers, Development Officers and Samurdhi officers.

The unions are demanding a salary increase and a Rs. 25,000 allowance. However, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) and the Nurses’ Association have not joined the strike, ensuring that the healthcare services remain unaffected.

The trade unions warned that if authorities fail to respond to their demands, they will gather in Colombo tomorrow to decide on their next course of action.
