Asoka Ranwala’s ‘Dr’ post takes a ridiculous turn

Colombo, January 1 (Daily Mirror) - The controversy surrounding former Speaker Asoka Ranwala’s doctorate has taken a bizarre twist, with NPP MP K. Illankumaran from the Jaffna district describing Ranwala as a “Medical Doctor".

Ranwala, recently resigned amid allegations of using fake educational credentials.

Speaking on a northern-based YouTube show, Illankumaran stated, “No, this doctorate was not awarded by himself but was created by the people. He went to Japan in 1989, comes from a family of medical doctors, and also studied medicine in Japan. He has earned a doctorate, which we all know. There is no requirement for a medical doctorate to be Speaker of Parliament.”

Critics are questioning whether Illankumaran’s remarks reflect a lack of proper knowledge or an attempt to mislead the public.

What is wrong with these NPP comrades? Their attempts to cover up their lies make them a laughingstock. If comrade Ashoka Ranwala is a medical doctor, then why can't he simply produce the medical degree certificate earned from the Japanese university and the SLMC registration number? Why did comrade Ranwala request more time to produce his credentials, where to date, he has failed to produce any? Hey, NPP, you can't fool Sri Lankans all the time. To be a speaker a doctorate is irrelevant but if he uses Dr. or Professor as title there should be documentary proof because students gain these titles after almost six years hard work

They will be claiming that he's the Creator of the Universe next. The much simpler explanation is that Ranwala is a liar and has lied about his academic credentials for a significant part of his life. I pity his family who seem to have also fallen for his deceptions.

We didn't know all the jockers ran under the NPP ticket. We trusted AKD and NPP to produce worthy people as candidates. It looks like they have failed in their responsibility. Ranwala is along time party cadre. They should know his background but projected him as a PHD anyway. It's their fault but it makes everybody who defended them in the society jokers. They should put gag orders on many of their MPs who put the foot in the mouth whenever they open it.
