Ballot paper to be the longest if designed in single column format

Colombo, August 16 (Daily Mirror) - With as many as 39 candidates in the presidential race , ballot paper is expected to be the longest ever with 27 inches in length and five inches in width if it is designed in a single column format, a source said .

A source from the Department of Government Printer said only the Election Commission should decide whether it is single column or double column .

According to the same source , the ballot paper will be 13.5 inches in length and width in case of a double column ballot paper .

“This is the longest ballot paper ever to be issued to voters at a presidential poll. There have been ballot papers longer than the expected one in the past, as far general elections were concerned ,”the source said.

The government is expected to incur a higher cost for printing materials with security features for long ballot papers .

At the last presidential election , the ballot paper was around 25 inches long .

If introduce the Preference No. for candidates, it will help to voters to find their candidate without confusing. This number can be inserted to the ballot paper in addition to the Name and Symbol of the candidate, As the Presidential Election Ballot Paper is common for entire country and no additional effort to insert the Preference No. and it easy for all administrative works of Election Commission and counting of votes.

It is ridiculous that with a total population of only 21M are criteria for the highest office in our country seems to be so low that as many as 40 candidates seem to think they are elligible to Govern this country. Ultimately it is us the masses who will have to carry the burden of cost. Since we are living on IMF terms how come such costs are not being reigned in. Elections Commissioner has failed even before starting and the current President has failed us yet again. Why are those politicians who were in the Govt which drove our economy to bankruptcy being permitted to contest ? Why are they not being held accountable for destroying public property and the economy? Money that should be funneled into the economy is now being used to fund this circus? Dont we citizens have redress to prevent yet again the massive misuse of public money?
