Colombo, September 13 (Daily Mirror)- The Cabinet has decided to lift the ban and restrictions on all vehicle imports by February 2025, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said today.
"With the significant improvement in forex reserves and the strength of the rupee, the Cabinet has decided to lift all vehicle import ban/restrictions by February 2025. This decision is part of our ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in the economy and meet the needs of our people," he said in a post on X.

By that time we dont know which Govt will be in Power. The country is yet not ready for vehicle imports. The Vehicle market is one of the most corrupt and unregulated. I just cant imagine the hard earned Forex Reserves are going to be used for something unnecessary as this

With the improvement of Forex the urgent need is to import vehicles. This man Sabry must ask the Health sector about their need in importing drugs and equipment specially to be used in provincial Hospitals. The shortages are many and they are ignored

Wishful thinking, who do you think woold be the happiest? The car dealers, they will mark up the new ones 1 to 1 and sell and the used cars will still stay the same in price. They wont take a hit on the prices.

This msg should have come from the Ministry of Finance or Treasury Secretary. If the govt is so serious about this, they could hv gazetted this. This could be another attempt by Ranil to attract votes for him. People should not be foolish to believe this and cast their votes to either SJB or NPP for a change.

With carbon footprint matters etc ideally the govt should have only allowed import of brand new fully electric and hybrid, PHEV vehicles as the first stage. And later in the year allow fossil fuel using private use vehicles

Why is a Foreign Minister who is not responsible for the Financial matters announcing such important information. Might be deceiving the people so that car owners and dealers will vote for them. However, the nation remains entrenched in an economic crisis, with foreign debt continuing to escalate alarmingly. Despite this, both the government and the Automobile Importers Association appear determined to prioritize vehicle imports. Meanwhile, the dire conditions faced by railway commuters are largely ignored, with little public discourse on the matter. Rather than fostering entrepreneurship or addressing more pressing national issues, the government seems focused on vehicle imports. Numerous road projects remain unfinished, and hospitals are struggling with malfunctioning CT scanners due to a lack of spare parts.

He just signed new loans, agreed everything IMF laid on the table and shifted the loan plus interest payments to around 2026. He had to get advisors to guide him too. Didn’t do it alone. So, Sri Lanka is still Bankrupt and a long long way to settle the outstanding loans plus need to improve depleting medical, transportation etc facilities. Next 20 to 30 years will be challenging times and need a younger team of professionals to set stern policies and downsize all government agencies and expenditures. Can go on with the status quo where only a few benefits from the current Misfits running the country! Majority are living a miserable life and only the elites with all kinds of both legal and illegal businesses can survive.
