Do not mislead public on vehicle imports: Minister urges importers
Despite advertisements by vehicle importers claiming that vehicle imports will soon be allowed, Cabinet spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa urged them not to mislead the public with such claims.
The Minister explained that while the government is considering the import of vehicles with restrictions, no decision has been taken yet to permit the import of all types of vehicles.
"Deputy Finance Minister, Professor Anil Jayantha Fernando, addressed a media conference prior to the last Cabinet briefing and announced the government's decision on vehicle imports. Accordingly, steps are being taken to allow vehicle imports under certain restrictions," the Minister stated.
"As a government, we approach decisions on vehicle imports carefully, factoring in our reserves and the state of our economy. We are not willing to make decisions that could place significant pressure on the economy," he added.
