Colombo, December 17 (Daily Mirror) - Egg producers have been affected by the price drop of eggs in the local market caused by high production, Sri Lanka Association of Animal Production president Ajith Gunasekera said.
He told the media that a large-sized egg is currently sold in the market at Rs.30 to Rs.31, while a small-sized egg is sold at Rs.28. The current egg production exceeds the demand in the local market, and as a result egg prices are dropping rapidly.
"The current cost of producing an egg is Rs. 34, but the selling price is Rs. 30 to Rs. 31. If this situation continues, egg producers will abandon production," he warned.
The association, therefore, urged the government to take steps to protect the egg producers.
Gunasekera added that small and medium-scale egg producers had started raising chickens on a large scale, which has led to increased egg production in the country.
He further said that the cost of egg production has risen significantly due to the increased price of animal feed, which accounts for 75 percent of production costs.
Gunasekera also predicted that there could be a shortage of eggs during the upcoming New Year season.
