Government to oppose UNHRC resolution 51/1: Foreign Minister

Colombo, October 08 (Daily Mirror)- Sri Lanka will continue to oppose the 51/1 resolution of the draft resolution of the United Nations Human Rights Council at the the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council to be held tomorrow, Cabinet Spokesman Vijitha herath said today.

He told the weekly briefing to announce Cabinet decisions that the Cabinet decided to strongly oppose the 51/1 resolution of the draft resolution of the United Nations Human Rights Council and will not agreed to any resolution that extends the powers of the collection of external evidence mechanism.

The Minister said even though the said proposal has been denied, Sri Lanka has firmly believed to take action in respect of main human right issues including reconciliation through local procedure.

"The government will take new action to ensure the protection of human rights. We have proposed new actions in our election manifesto in that regard. We will brief the UNHRC on this matter," he said.

"Sri Lanka will continue to engage in the cooperative and meaningful discussions with the Human Rights Council and regular human rights mechanisms," the Minister added.

Absolutely this position cannot change given the sentiments of the majority and especially the prime vote bank from outstations, which is essential for any political party's survival. No party shall commit political hara kiri surely. Any party who dares to act otherwise shall be very likely be thrown out by the majority, whose children and family have sacrificed their luves for the country.

Well there needs to be continuity in policy where the UN is concerned, unless there is robust discussion on this issue that requires change. There are more priority issues for the new government to address IMO. Good decision, for now.

During the thirty-year war many lives were destroyed by the LTTE even Tamils who were again this disastrous project.The West was clandestinely supporting this terrorist organization for their geopolitical objectives.after pandering to the west by several weak presidents,Rajapakse saw the need to bring this to an end. he did not listen to the western delegation that came to put pressure, ie UK EU.USA.the are still feel angry about this hence these HR issues. major wars conducted by the west vietnam,afgernistan,siriya.libiya etc are crimes agaist humanity human rights issures was not a concern...

Come on Mr. Herath, don't sing the same tune. Your days also will be numbered. Remember, all the past governments has been talking about local mechanisms, but only in words during UNHRC meetings. You may see the Reconciliation process in Rwanda, if you don't understand what is Reconciliation.

The president government needs to corporate with the UNHCR and implement all recommendations. You asked for a change but back tracking on Human Rights violations? Can’t have both ways- be transparent and truthfulness in every aspect if you want to be successful in winning the hearts of the people

If there are "proposed new actions" in government's "election manifesto", it must make them widely known. Right now seems they are blocking for the sake of blocking, not letting UNHCR to forward for improvements so for peaceful existence of Sri Lankans can become a reality. Sri Lanka is always opposing, opposing, and opposing 51/1.
