Govt. to recall Ambassadors, High Commissioners appointed on political allegiances

The government has taken steps to recall Ambassadors and High Commissioners who were appointed on political allegiances.

Addressing the media at the weekly meeting to announce Cabinet decisions, Minister Vijitha Herath said a report is being prepared on the matter.

He said political appointees will be recalled based on this report.

“Many sons and daughters of MPs have been given diplomatic appointments,” he said.

However, the minister said that no Sri Lankan diplomat will be recalled immediately.

please give preference to talents, skills, knowledge, honesty, integrity and hard working people with good qualifications. Why do we have SLES examination? to select best of best candidates to all these highly demanding jobs. Today, we must send some of highly qualified people to these position in the national of our country. These diplomats could bring us a lot of investments, knowledges, technologies, skill sharing from all those countries they are appointed and yet, if we send unqualified people and inept people what benefit our country get? when talk about bankruptcy and opportunity cost, we should consider this indirect bankruptcy as well or opportunity cost. what if we send good people? how much we may have lost? it is also a crime to appoint unqualified people.. it legally, ethically and morally wrong to do it.

Not only Ambassadors and High Comms. There are many Honorary Consuls appointed by Rajapakses and who enjoy privileges in those countries for little value for our country.

Our gratitude for recalling all politically appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners. Send foreign service personnel for these positions, but a percentage of appointments should be allocated to the incumbent President to appoint on academic qualifications and to honour certain outstanding achivers as Ambassadors and High Commissioners. An Executive president is unquestionable and has certain privileges and independence in decision and appointment making. He cannot be restricted or barred from making diplomatic appointments.

There are technologies available to monitor and measure public sector KPIs. Ask some UNDP types or IT experts and procure such a system and ensure all commercial attaches, ambassadors, first officers etc in each foreign mission is given yearly targets to achieve in the form of foreign direct investments, trade successes and tie ups etc. The fastest way to cement system change is automation. If not nepotism and favouration will go un noticed. Specially once a govt gets 2/3rds majority.
